Dog door size guide

Dogs duck their head and lift their legs as they go through, so the flap only needs to be a little taller than your dog’s body — not the whole dog. What decides the model is your dog’s shoulder height (floor to the top of the shoulders), because the fitted opening must finish at least 25mm above it. Each model has a typical maximum shoulder height. Openings are given as the usable opening, width × height — the clear opening with the flap swung out of the way.

Shoulder-height limits assume the bottom of the opening is fitted level with the dog’s belly and the top finishes at least 25mm above the shoulders — the Medium door’s 450–500mm is the figure printed on its packaging. Also check that your dog’s width + 25mm and body depth (top of shoulders to bottom of chest) + 25mm fit inside the usable opening. Within 30mm of a limit, or an older dog? Choose the next size up. Which dog door is right for you?

Choose Glass Fitting if…
  • Your dog door will go into a glass panel, ranch slider, or double-glazed window
  • You want a glazier to handle the round cut-out installation
  • You need clear, white or black finish options
  • Your glass is between 3mm and 32mm thick
  • You need a slimline model to clear a sliding door frame
Choose Wood Fitting if…
  • Your dog door will go into a timber, PVC or hollow-core door
  • You want to install it yourself without a glazier
  • Your door panel is between 11mm and 52mm thick
  • You prefer a white or brown finish to match your door
  • You need a tunnel model for thicker walls or panels

Frequently Asked Questions — Dog Doors

Yes — the Dogwalk® glass fitting range is specifically designed for installation into glass doors and panels. The dog door fits into a round hole cut into the glass by a glazier. It cannot be installed into existing toughened or double-glazed glass — the glass panel must be replaced with a new one that has the cut-out pre-made at the time of manufacture. Your glazier can arrange this. View the full glass fitting dog door range.
For a glass sliding door or ranch slider, the slim line Dogwalk® models are the best choice — the G-DDSLC (clear) or G-DDSLW (white) Medium door for medium to semi-large dogs up to 450–500mm at the shoulder, or the G-IDDSLC / G-IDDSLW Intermediate for smaller breeds up to about 380mm. The slim line frame is designed to sit within the track depth of a sliding door without interfering with the door’s operation. Dual glaze models are also compatible with ranch sliders if the glass thickness requires it.
Yes — the dual glaze Dogwalk® models accommodate glass from 3mm up to 32mm, covering most modern double-glazed panels. The G-DDC, G-DDW and G-DDB (Medium) and G-IDDC, G-IDDW and G-IDDB (Intermediate) all support double glazing. The existing double-glazed panel must be replaced with a new unit that has the round cut-out pre-cut — your glazier can arrange this.
Three sizes, with usable openings given as width × height. The maxi pet door (187 × 190mm) suits large cats and toy dogs up to about 300mm at the shoulder. The intermediate dog door (216 × 237mm glass fitting; the wood fitting W-SDD is 180 × 227mm) suits small breeds up to about 380mm at the shoulder (W-SDD: about 360mm). The Medium dog door (270 × 300mm glass fitting / 270 × 307mm wood fitting) is specially developed for medium to semi-large dogs such as Beagles, Border Collies, Spaniels and Blue Heelers, up to a shoulder height of 450–500mm. Labradors, Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds sit at or above the top of that range — measure width and body depth first. Use the Pet Door Selector for a personalised recommendation.
Both have the same flap opening size within each size category — the difference is the frame depth. Slim line models (G-DDSLC, G-DDSLW, G-IDDSLC, G-IDDSLW) have a lower-profile frame suited to thinner single-pane glass (4–20mm) and narrow sliding door profiles. Dual glaze models (G-DDC, G-DDW, G-DDB, G-IDDC, G-IDDW, G-IDDB) have a deeper frame accommodating glass up to 32mm, making them the right choice for double-glazed units and thicker panels.
Yes. Because the glass panel must be replaced rather than cut on-site, a glazier is required for glass fitting installations. The glazier orders a replacement panel with the round cut-out pre-cut to the correct diameter, removes the existing panel, fits the new one, and installs the dog door. Wood fitting Dogwalk® models can be DIY-installed into timber or PVC doors without a glazier. Contact us if you need guidance finding a glazier in New Zealand.
Yes. All Dogwalk® models include a weather seal to reduce draughts and keep rain and insects out. Security is managed via a 4-way manual locking dial — set to fully open, in-only, out-only, or fully locked. Security clips are also available for the glass fitting range as an additional locking measure. View security clips and accessories.
Glass fitting Dogwalk® models are available in clear, white and black across most size ranges. Clear suits aluminium joinery and modern glass doors. White suits white-frame joinery. Black suits dark-frame ranch sliders and contemporary homes. Wood fitting models are available in white and brown to match timber and PVC doors. Colour availability varies by model — check individual product pages for exact options.
